Chinese New Year in 2020 begins on January 25. The multi-day celebration marks the start of a new year on the lunar calendar. The first day of Chinese New Year begins when the new moon appears between January 21 and February 20.
This year's event runs through February 8, which is when the Lantern Festival is held, marking the official end of Chinese New Year celebrations.

Nian gao has the same pronunciation as the Chinese word for tall or high, so this rice cake is eaten to wish for a higher, more successful year than the previous year.
